Tests & Results

Tests and finding out my results

Phlebotomy

Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example a blood test can be used to:

  • Help with a diagnosis
  • Assess your general state of health
  • Confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
  • See how well certain organs, such as the liver or kidneys, are functioning
  • Check your cholesterol level
  • Monitor your current treatment/medication

The sample of blood is taken by a trained member of the Community Treatment and Care Room staff (CTAC) either within the Adamson Hospital or in the practice itself and is sent to the laboratory to be tested.

The CTAC phlebotomists who take blood may also check blood pressures, measure height and weight.

The practice nursing team may also do this as well as perform new patient checks and some chronic disease reviews.

How do I get my test results?

Please allow at least 5 working days for test results to be received.  More specialist results may take longer.

Our results line is open every day; please telephone 01334 651201 and press option 3 between 12:30pm and 1:00pm when you will be given your results;  the results may be given by a member of the nursing team or on occasion by a member of the admin team, who can only provide the information instructed by a clinician.

 What do your results mean?

If your result is normal

You will not normally be contacted with your result by the practice. It is very important, however, that you are aware of the results of tests to ensure they have been received and acted upon if necessary. If you are not contacted, it is your responsibility to contact the practice to obtain your result.

If your result is abnormal

If your results are abnormal you will be contacted by the practice and asked to make an appointment with one of the GPs to discuss any concerns. An abnormality can be caused by various conditions and your test may need to be repeated.  The reasons could include:

  • A slight change from previous tests which may need to be monitored
  • A question on the reliability of the result
  • Further investigation required into a probable cause
  • The test has been spoilt, i.e. leaked in transit
